John 15:4-8
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me—and I in him—bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up, and they gather them up and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you. My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.
Jesus tells us that He is the VINE, and believers are like vines attached to Him. I like that image-- the thought of being directly tied to Him is a happy one. When I am not living in this reality, I can become confused. I forget what (or, more accurately, WHO) I am truly attached to. It's easy to forget. If I am not prayerful and careful, I start to get "attached" to worldly things.....things like money and houses and popularity and savings accounts and degrees and career titles and jeans sizes and....all those silly things that human beings look to to get their value and worth as a person. But, nothing from that list bears "fruit."
The "fruit" God promises is: love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, humility and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23). Money can't buy love or joy. Popularity doesn't provide peace. Being CEO doesn't mean you are truly good, or gentle. A PhD doesn't give you faith. Being a size 4 doesn't bring humility. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, there is no such thing as self-control. No, the only way to be able to experience--as well as give away-- real FRUIT is through Jesus. Those nine things are what we all desperately want to be. We are searching for them, starving for them. They are worth more than the wealthiest human being could afford to purchase. They are everlasting. Once Jesus gives them to you, nobody else can take them from you. When we interject these things into the lives of others, we glorify God.
"In theory, Christians know the truth that our Lord is emphasizing here [John 15:4-8], but very often we simply don’t believe it in a practical way. We really don’t believe that apart from Him we can do nothing. The message that we constantly hear from the human potential advocates and motivational speakers is that we have much more power within us than we know, and that by digging deep within ourselves and drawing upon our own hidden strengths, we can do great things. This is not what our Lord teaches us concerning the bearing of spiritual fruit. He instructs us that we can do nothing apart from a vital union with Him, in which we constantly draw from His life, His strength, His truth."

Sometimes I like to close my eyes and envision a big, sturdy stake being hammered deeply into a massive hunk of granite. And that stake has a braided thick cord firmly attached to it-- a carbon-fiber rope, if you will. And then, when I look to the end of that cord, there I see me. Hurricane winds come, but I cannot be loosed from my stake. I am tethered to The Rock, my Savior, my Jesus. And, as that old Ray Boltz song proclaims, "the anchor holds." In my mind, this visual illustrates security and peace. The two things that are ellusive to me when I am tethered to anything other than Jesus. Why would we do such an absurd thing? We try, even after Jesus has grafted us into Himself, to splice ourselves into some crazy scrub brush.....some stinky overgrown weed! Why do we turn to other things to give us worth and security? Are we so dull? Yes. I have done it, and I'd be willing to bet that you have, too. It's puzzling, but it seems we were created to be yoked with something, enslaved, tethered. We are never truly "free agents," so to speak. We are enslaved/yoked/tethered either to sin, or to God. It's just how we are made, and there is no in-between.
Lately, I have been meditating on the fact that I am forever, irreversibly, TETHERED to Jesus. I seem to keep coming back to that word: tethered. So, I googled the definition of the word, and this is what I came up with:
- A tether is a cord that anchors something movable to a reference point which may be fixed or moving.
- Confined or restricted with a rope, chain or cord.
- Tethering is the use of a mobile device (such as a mobile phone) to supply Internet access for another device which is otherwise unconnected, using the mobile device as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology or cables (such as USB). The connection of a personal computer to a mobile phone so as to obtain wireless Internet access from the PC.
- To tie with a rope or light chain; "tether horses"
- A leash; restraint used to control an animal or hold it in place.
- Biological cells which form bonds with a substrate and are at the same time subject to a flow can form long thin membrane cylinders called "tethers," which connect the adherent area to the main body of the cell. Under physiological conditions, neutrophil tethers can extend to several micrometers.
- A rope, cable, etc. that holds something in place whilst allowing some movement.
- The limit of one's abilities, resources, etc.
- The cardinal number three in an old counting system used in Teesdale and Swaledale. (Variant of tethera)
- A cord that is used to keep two things attached to each other, such as an astronaut to a spaceship.
- Binding of the spinal cord to surrounding tissue.
- Braided Kevlar double strap bolted to the wheel on one end and to the chassis of an automobile on the other to keep the wheel attached to the chassis in case of an accident.
Galatians 5:1
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
